Again, excerpts from my open letter to Ted Gunderson (2005).
This segment addresses federal whistleblower Stew Webb, a former colleague of mine, whom Ted Gunderson accused of being an FBI informant.
So let me set the record straight, at least with a small portion of what I know, based on my own interactions with Stew Webb and associated persons.
I say Stew is a former colleague. Here's why: Although I defended Stew when he was falsely accused by Ted Gunderson of being an FBI informant, I later found it necessary to break off my association with Stew Webb, just as I had with Ted Gunderson.
Stew started out being a legitimate whistleblower. In those days (mid to late 90s) whistleblowers were actually protected under certain laws (don't ask me, I'm not an expert on this), and so Stew was in contact with federal agents. The problem was, these agents were corrupt, and I refused to deal with them for this reason.
These were the same agents who were trying to set me up, who were sending their messengers to threaten me, simply because I had urged some of the Special Forces operatives (whom I had debriefed and counseled in connection with CIA) to defend the Constitution, and the God-given rights protected therein.
Also, I found out that Stew was using forged documents to promote false information, which I absolutely refused to be a part of. I actually was acquainted with the “source” who forged these documents, whom I had also had to break off my association with, for cause.
There is no point in being a whistleblower if one is not absolutely honest and uncompromising in reports of corruption, in naming the actual names of offenders, stating the actual facts, rather than engaging in speculation, or worse, employing falsehoods for an agenda. This is the “ends justify the means” ideology, and I will have no part of it.
So, as I saw my friends and colleagues, one by one, going to the dark side, by thinking they could compromise, play fast and loose with the truth, I had no choice but to walk away. How tragic. But unless they came after me publicly, in a vengeful manner, I found no reason to name them.
Unfortunately, Stew Webb chose that route. When I refused to be a part of his schemes to promote false information “for the cause”, he retaliated against me by accusing me of being “part of an Israeli spy ring”, a “fallen angel with demonic alien DNA”, and even (believe it or not), a “CIA hit man”. The fact that I am a woman seemed to have escaped his notice.
Stew promoted these preposterous conspiracy theories all over the “patriot” radio circuit, most notably on the Hal Turner Show. Hal Turner, a notorious racist, an actual FBI informant, a snitch, just as Ted Gunderson accused Stew Webb of being. Turner was later betrayed by the FBI and actually served jail time.
The fact is, the minute I see anyone as being the slightest bit corrupt, I look into the situation, and when I have established the facts to my satisfaction, if there is a problem, I confront it head on with the individual. If the individual lies to me, engages in misdirection, is in denial of their involvement in shady dealings, or tries to pressure me into continuing an association, I will always tell them to their faces, NO. I will not be a part of this. There is no further discussion, no negotiation, no excuses. I just walk away and that is the end of it, at least for me.
And so, this is how I have lost friends, over and over again. So be it. Better to maintain honor, act on principle, and stand alone, than to join the bad guys by compromising with evil for self-serving ends.

FINANCING BARBARA HARTWELL'S EXPENSES
Ted Gunderson: "You state that the only money you have received for your "work" has been from public contributions. You fail to mention that I have sent you money and financed a number of your expenses."
Yes, Ted, you "sent" me a grand total (over the course of three years) of one hundred dollars ($100.00) by a personal check, in 1997. And you are correct in stating that you financed "expenses" at certain times when we worked together, including on the Linda Wiegand case in Connecticut in 1997.
But that was not my "work", that was yours, for which I donated my time to help you with the legal case. That is, I wrote the legal summary after John DeCamp failed to deliver the legal services he contracted for with Linda Wiegand, and for which she paid him $10,000. Or have you forgotten that too? You also took me to dinner a number of times, at various locations around the country and gave me free copies of some of your tapes and reports.
Thank you, Ted. I appreciate it. In the days when I still trusted you and believed you were working toward the same objectives as I, such as exposing government corruption and pursuing justice for targets of government-sponsored crimes, I was only too happy to help you in any way I could. I even loaned you a car and found you someone to chauffeur you around, when you had no transportation.
Since I'm honest and straightforward, I can also admit that I enjoyed your company, you were entertaining, charming and fun to hang out with. You, unlike some of your cohorts, were also a perfect gentleman, at least in your treatment of me. I'll also admit I was pretty devastated when I finally realized that I could not, in good conscience, continue to associate with you, nor would it be judicious for me to continue to trust you. You broke my heart, Ted, I'll admit that too. But I got over it, so don't expect any sympathy from me.
However, since I have not seen you in well over five years, I don't understand how you could possibly equate your past generosity to me with "financing" the expenses for my work, most of which I incurred after I broke off my association with you. And I know for a fact that the massive libel campaign your PR shill, Ken Adachi, has been running against me since 2001, has prevented quite a number of people from making contributions to support my work. Nice work, Ted, helping with my finances.
STEW WEBB: FBI INFORMANT?
Ted Gunderson: "You state you are working with Stew Webb and Jackie McGauley. I have a video tape interview with Webb in which he admits he is an FBI informant. I will make this tape available to you at no cost. You claim to be a journalist so you need documentation for your work. I urge you to order this video tape."
Well, thanks for the offer, Ted, but you don't have to urge me to order the tape. I already have one. Don't you remember? You sent me one yourself, in 2003. I still have it, along with the handwritten note you sent. It said: "Barbara, stop putting out the B.S. on me"...as well as claiming that the tape contained "proof" that Stew Webb is an FBI informant.
But there was only one problem: No such "proof" was on the tape, as you claimed. I did hear Stew say that he had furnished the FBI with information about criminal activities to which he had been made privy (not that he himself had been involved in) and for which he had evidence. He has never denied that.
Maybe Stew was naive at one time, since some of the agents eventually used it to try to set him up, on yet another "murder-for-hire" scheme. One of them was Mark Hostlaw, whom I urged Stew to get away from and with whom I refused to speak myself, except once, briefly, on the phone. One conversation with Hostlaw was all I needed. I didn't like the vibes from Hostlaw and refused to speak to him again. And considering the fact that Tim White calls him a "friend" and has told many lies about me being "CIA" to Hostlaw and other corrupt FBI agents in Denver, it seems it was a judicious move on my part.
But I have called the FBI myself, in attempts to have them investigate criminals whom I have "information" about. Including your friend, Tim White. But what's wrong with that? True, they did nothing about it, but they will be held accountable, for obstruction of justice, that is.
The only honest FBI agent I've ever known, as a matter of fact, is my friend Geral Sosbee. Who was forced to resign from the FBI because of that very honesty; and because he defended the Constitution. Most of these corrupt Feds in Denver have never even read the Constitution, much less would defend it. No, they're using it for toilet paper and if they had their d'ruthers would flush away everyone's Constitutional rights. Tim White was making harassing phone calls to Geral, as well. What a coincidence.
And what about the fact that Stew Webb was designated a "Federal Whistleblower" so that he could (supposedly) expose crimes without worry of retaliation? That didn't work out too well for him, did it? Considering he had false arrests and SWAT teams deployed against him.
